Tablet: ACER ICONIA B1-A71 [Review]

Acer Iconia B1-A71 is a 7-inch tablet. Apparently it’s made of plastic. It’s light in weight but feels fragile. The hardware does not exude the feeling of resilience. Application of pressure on its screen shows creaks and pushes through.

Regarding the design and structure, the front of the tablet has a big black bezel. Its screen peeps through it in a manner similar to a digital photo-frame. Its VGA camera is at the right side. It’s Acer branding being in the middle. The blue colored frame doesn’t do much to compliment the gadget.

The back has been done in black colored plastic. A Micro USB port is located at the bottom with a slot for a micro-SD card that is covered with an insert. It also has a 3.5 mm headset jack sits at the top of the device. The volume rocker and the power/sleep button is at the right side of the tablet.

The 7-inch (diagonal) WSVGA capacitive multi-touch screen comes with a resolution of 1024×600 pixels. The pixel density is about 170 ppi. Acer is bright but due to its reflective nature its not visible under sunlight. The images are less sharp due to low resolution. The screen is very decent for e-books and magazine.

Acer Iconia B1 is one of the few 7-inch tablets that run Jelly Bean 7. The tablet’s on screen controls (for Home, Back and application Switching) are at the center, and the notification tray and quick access settings (for brightness, screen timeout, Wi-Fi, Screen rotation, blue-tooth, GPS, Airplane mode and shortcut to Settings) are located at the top area in the notification tray.

It has five customizable home screens that can be filled with app shortcuts and widgets. The standard app launcher and dock that allows users to place six of their preferred applications are omnipresent across all home-screens. The standard lock screen allows users to either unlock the device or go straight into the camera. Of course, users can customize it to put a Face Unlock, Pattern, PIN or Password lock.

The tablet is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-coreprocessor alongside 512MB of RAM. One can easily multi-task on it.. The Acer Iconia B1 comes with a 0.3-mega pixel front-facing camera though the pictures come out gritty. It’s very good for making video calls over Skype or other video chat applications.

The tablet comes with the native Android browser and Chrome, and renders all Web Pages well. The speaker grill on the back of the tablet produces average quality sound. There’s no voice calling or support for 3G data via SIM card or dongles, and the only way to connect to the Internet is through Wi-Fi. It download speed is low though compared to other devices. It has an inbuilt storage and a micro-SD card slot that allows users to expand storage. The tablet also features a GPS module..
